Perinatal Mental Health: Culturally Informed Approaches to Screening, Assessment And Treatment

These two 90-minute webinars were hosted by Postpartum Support International and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) on presented on May 18 and May 24, 2022. They present an overview of perinatal mental health screening, assessment, treatment, and referral pathways through the lens of culturally-informed care and best practices in treatment of perinatal mood and anxiety disorders. Webinar #1 focused on the impact of social determinants of health, the effects of the pandemic, and improving healthcare clinicians’ awareness of trauma informed care and culturally informed approaches for perinatal mental health care.

Webinar #2

Saira S Kalia, MD, MBBS; Tiffany Conyers, LCSW, PMH-C; Jabina Coleman, LCSW, IBCLC

Webinar #2 focused on historical trauma and structural racism and its impact on maternal health and mental health care, defining and recognizing implicit bias and microaggressions, practicing cultural humility, and incorporating cultural identity into a patient’s care.

Continuing Education Credits:

3 credit hours

CME: The AAFP has reviewed Perinatal Mental Health: Culturally Informed Approaches to Screening, Assessment, and Treatment and deemed it acceptable for up to 3.00 Enduring Materials, Self-Study AAFP Elective credits. Term of Approval is from 05/21/2023 to 05/21/2024. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. AAFP Prescribed credit is accepted by the American Medical Association as equivalent to AMA PRA Category 1 credit(s)™ toward the AMA Physician’s Recognition Award. When applying for the AMA PRA, Prescribed credit earned must be reported as Prescribed, not as Category 1.

APA Psychologists: Postpartum Support International (PSI) is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. Postpartum Support International (PSI) maintains responsibility for this program and its content. 3 continuing education hours.

SOCIAL WORKERS: Postpartum Support International, #2361, is approved as an ACE provider to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Regulatory boards are the final authority on courses accepted for continuing education credit. ACE provider approval period: 4/11/2025 – 4/11/2026. Social workers completing this course receive 3 clinical continuing education credits.

NBCC: Postpartum Support International has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP No. 6765. Programs that do not qualify for NBCC credit are clearly identified. Postpartum Support International is solely responsible for all aspects of the programs. “In order to award NBCC credit, the Provider must ensure that the participant attended the live program, and was present for the number of NBCC hours indicated on the certificate or letter of completion, as required by Section I.3.” 

Occupational Therapists: PSI is an approved provider of CEUs by American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA), Provider #11342. The assignment of AOTA CEUs does not imply endorsement of specific course content, products, or clinical procedures by AOTA or indicate AOTA approval of a certification or other professional recognition.
