Laura Yellin, Ed.S.
Laura Yellin is a passionate educator specializing in Special Education and Deaf Education. She has been working in the Virginia public school system for 14 years, gaining experience in various settings. Her background includes teaching a self-contained class for 7th and 8th graders with multiple disabilities and working as an itinerant teacher for Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing (D/HH) students from PreK to 12th grade. As of this school year, she is teaching special education to second graders. Laura, who is Deaf and uses bilateral cochlear implants, is fluent in American Sign Language (ASL), spoken English, and Cued American English (also known as Cued Speech).
Laura’s life changed dramatically after experiencing Postpartum Psychosis (PPP) following the births of her two children, once in 2022 and again in 2023. Recently divorced and embracing her newfound happiness, she is dedicated to her healing process by volunteering with Postpartum Support International (PSI) in multiple ways, including serving as a mentor and co-leader for support groups. She strives to raise awareness about PPP, which she believes is both impactful and life-changing. Laura feels that perinatal and postpartum anxiety and mood disorders (PMADs) are not discussed enough, leaving families unprepared for potential challenges.
Her journey has been traumatic, navigating the mental health, medical, family law, court, and legal systems amid a lack of knowledge, accessibility, and support during those times. Laura is committed to ensuring that current and future mothers are surrounded by a strong support system and can advocate for their perinatal and postpartum needs. In addition to her experiences with PPP, she has also struggled with postpartum depression and anxiety. Despite the challenges of experiencing PPP twice, Laura has survived and is determined to promote change within these broken systems. She currently resides in Arlington, VA, and is a proud mother of two young and beautiful Deaf children.
