This is the Frequently Asked Questions for the PSI Substance Use Recovery Support Group. Click here to view information on this support group.
Who is the group for?
PSI’s support group for substance use recovery is for moms and birthing people from pregnancy to two years postpartum who are engaged in or considering recovery from substance use disorders. No formal diagnosis is needed.
What do we mean by recovery?
PSI honors that the road to recovery and maintaining sobriety looks different and unique for each individual. We do not have a one size fits all definition of recovery. SAMHSA defines recovery as “a process of change through which individuals improve their health and wellness, live a self directed life, and strive to reach their full potential.” We welcome all on their recovery journey, whether abstinence or harm reduction is their current goal. We also recognize that medication-assisted recovery works for some individuals.
Who would not be a good fit for this group yet?
Anyone who is actively under the influence of substances should not attend the group as this could be triggering or a distraction to other group members. We understand that relapse and setbacks are a common occurrence for most during recovery, and we welcome back members when they are not under the influence of substances. Any parent beyond two years postpartum would not be a fit for this group.
What are other resources available?
PSI is just one piece of the puzzle for perinatal people in recovery. Please see this webpage for a list of resources. We encourage you to engage all resources that are available and feel like a fit for you at this time.
What about confidentiality?
PSI strives to maintain confidentiality in all of our group spaces as well as judgment-free support. We ask group members and peer facilitators to keep all information confidential. The only time peer facilitators would share any information is if someone was in immediate danger of harm. Cameras and sharing are only required during introductions. For the rest of the meeting, group members may have cameras off and may choose how much they would like to share.
Why are only moms and birthing people included in this group?
While PSI recognizes the need for all parents to receive support, we know that gestational carriers, those who are pregnant, and body/breast feeding have different challenges and concerns when it comes to substance use as well as an increased stigma.
